What Is Black Mold?

There is a certain stigma that surrounds mold when it comes to the dangers that it may hold.  Much of the hysteria surrounding mold growth has been exacerbated by sensationalized media stories in previous years about “black mold”.  This type of mold, known as Stachybotrys chartarum, can produce allergens and irritants, however there are many other types of mold that may be just as irritating.

All mold should be properly remediated to preserve the health and safety of your home or workspace environment.  At SERVPRO of Mobile County, our technicians have undergone extensive training and certification in the proper removal and treatment of mold. We are an IICRC Certified firm and our team members hold AMRT (Applied Microbial Remediation Technician) Certification.  We follow all standards and guidelines as set forth by the IICRC, OSHA and EPA.

If not handled properly, mold can quickly spread and affect much of the structure well as the contents.  If you suspect a mold issue in your home or office, call us today at 251-343-0534 to schedule a consultation.

Understanding Mold

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
